Obsessive-compulsive disorder has been linked to low serotonin levels in the brain. According to a 2008 Nutrition Journal article, certain nutrients can help increase serotonin and ease OCD symptoms.
Livestrong.com reports that B vitamins are instrumental in increasing serotonin. It writes:
Vitamin B-3, or niacin, increases tryptophan, an amino acid, which is a precursor in producing serotonin, the Linus Pauling Institute notes. Vitamin B-6, or pyridoxine, also aids in serotonin and norepinephrine production. These chemicals are significant in calming mood and obsessive thoughts.
Vitamin C can also help. High doses (5000mg) of vitamin C have an impact on adrenal glands, which help the body respond to stress. Stress and anxiety are major factors in OCD.
Minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium can also help alleviate OCD symptoms.
As with any course of treatment, check with your doctor first -- don't just start taking vitamin supplements on your own.
