My son is 13 and has OCD. He has been taking fluoxetine for about 2 years. He is currently at 40mg a day. I have been told by several people that prozac is not the greatest drug. What is the best drug to treat OCD.

There are a number of effective drugs for OCD, such as Prozac, but you might ask your psychiatrist about Luvox (Fluvoxamine), since this drug was developed specifically for OCD. Another very effective drug is Clomipramine (Anafranil). The problem with medications like these (SRI's, or serotonin reuptake inhibitors) is that most people only improve about 30% on these drugs, and then they relapse when the medication is stopped. The best treatment for OCD is a type of therapy called exposure and ritual prevention. This treatment is 80% and offers more lasting gains. I'm using Zoloft 100mg and is a good one. Right now im having a lot of obsessions and compulsions specially at university. Im 20 years. The doctor changed the treatment to fluvoxamine like 2 years ago but he changed it again because zoloft results to be better. But it depends of the person. Im telling you because your son is young and maybe can be a good change. The doctor also use another medicine with Zoloft for some months. Was risperdal, is an anthipsicotic. I think that the two medicine together are a very good solution. Try to talk with the doctor and consult to know if is good for him.
